{"id":9916,"date":"2024-07-12T10:29:39","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T08:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tethys.farm\/?p=9916"},"modified":"2025-11-04T18:31:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T16:31:17","slug":"ocm-moria-kiwi-project-step-forward-innovation-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tethys.farm\/en\/ocm-moria-kiwi-project-step-forward-innovation-7\/","title":{"rendered":"OCM project on kiwi dying: activities in the first half of 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"9916\" class=\"elementor elementor-9916\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7dd5430e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7dd5430e\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-no\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3a718e95\" data-id=\"3a718e95\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-353ef5b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"353ef5b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.farm\/en\/ocm-moria-kiwi-project-step-forward-innovation-2\/\">research project on kiwifruit mortality<\/a>, launched last year within the Operational Programme of the<strong>Common Market Organization (CMO) for fruit and vegetables in Emilia-Romagna and financed by Elle Esse AOP<\/strong>, keep doing <strong>steps forward<\/strong> and to arouse considerable interest among those involved in the agricultural sector.<\/p><p>The project aims to <strong>Explore the impact of water management on kiwifruit decline syndrome<\/strong>, a major problem for farmers. The main objective is <strong>improve the sustainability of agroecosystems and address this syndrome with determination<\/strong>, which represents a significant threat to Italian kiwifruit production.<\/p><h2>Project approach and purpose<\/h2><p>The heart of the project is the<strong> search for optimal solutions for the use of water and nutritional resources<\/strong>, adapting them to the specific phenological phases of kiwi (Actinidia). This work aims to <strong>increase sustainability and effectively combat kiwifruit decline<\/strong>. A key aspect of the project is the<strong>adoption of innovative technologies<\/strong>, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.farm\/en\/watch-crop-monitoring-2\/\">satellite monitoring<\/a>, to obtain a <strong>comprehensive view of agricultural field conditions and provide timely information to adjust agronomic practices<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Preliminary results and first discoveries<\/h2><p>In the first months of the project, <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.farm\/en\/ocm-moria-kiwi-project-step-forward-innovation-5\/\">the analyses<\/a> they focused on the <strong>Response of vegetation and biophysical indices calculated from satellite images of plots covered with anti-hail nets<\/strong>. Due to the increase in extreme weather events, such as hailstorms, there is a growing trend to cover kiwi plants.<\/p><h3>Comparison between covered and uncovered fields<\/h3><p>The analysis <strong>compared the NDVI, LAI, FPAR and FCOVER indices from 1 March 2023 to 31 October 2023 between a plot covered with anti-hail net and an uncovered one with similar characteristics<\/strong>. The results showed that the<strong>coverage does not compromise the validity of the indexes<\/strong>, except for FCOVER, without prejudice to the need to use appropriate conversion factors.<\/p><h3>Impact of the color of protective nets<\/h3><p>A further study concerned <strong>the color of the anti-hail nets, to determine which shade responds best to satellite analyses of the health status of the plants<\/strong>. The first results, obtained from plots in Basilicata and Calabria, show that the <strong>black covers<\/strong> do not significantly alter the satellite signals and indices used, as well as those<strong> yellow<\/strong>. For the comparison between plots covered with anti-hail sheets and neighbouring and similar plots but without cover <strong>the value and trend of some vegetation (NDVI) and biophysical (LAI, Fcover, fPAR) indices calculated from earth observation images are being studied in depth<\/strong>The analyses just started take into consideration <strong>awnings with different solar coverage index values<\/strong> (the result of the combination of colour and texture of the covers), so as to <strong>identify the range of values that do not significantly impact the results of satellite analyses<\/strong> and to introduce any appropriate conversion factors. <\/p><h3>Calculating Evapotranspiration<\/h3><p>A research activity has also been started aimed at <strong>Calculation of the actual evapotranspiration of yellow kiwi crops from satellite images and weather data through TETHYS algorithms<\/strong>. These data will then be compared with what is detected with ground instruments by technicians from the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, which participates in the research project.
