It doesn&#039;t measure temperature, doesn&#039;t consider wind, doesn&#039;t interpret soil moisture, doesn&#039;t read the plant&#039;s vegetative state, and doesn&#039;t account for differences within the same plot.<\/p><p>In a context in which <strong>water availability is under increasing pressure<\/strong> And <strong>extreme weather events make the seasons less linear<\/strong>, watering according to the calendar is no longer enough. We need to move from a management based on recurrence to <strong>management based on the real needs of the crop<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Why calendar irrigation has worked for years<\/h2><p>Calendar irrigation does not arise from an error, but from <strong>a concrete need<\/strong>.<\/p><p>For many agricultural companies it has been, and in part continues to be, <strong>a simple way to organize irrigation activities<\/strong>, plan the work, coordinate the interventions and respect any water distribution shifts.<\/p><p>In relatively stable climates, this system could offer an acceptable level of efficiency. If the seasons repeated themselves with a certain regularity, if rainfall was more predictable, and if temperatures remained within less extreme ranges, <strong>the experience accumulated over the years often allowed us to construct irrigation schemes that were quite consistent with the needs of the crops<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The problem is that <strong>today the context has changed<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Agricultural seasons are increasingly exposed to <strong>sudden oscillations<\/strong>, with prolonged periods of drought alternating with intense and concentrated rainfall. <strong>high temperatures<\/strong> They increase the evaporative demand of the atmosphere and alter the rate at which crops consume water. At the same time, <strong>the availability of the resource can no longer be considered a stable fact<\/strong>.<\/p><p>In this scenario, <strong>an irrigation shift decided only on the basis of the calendar<\/strong> it risks arriving too early, too late or with volumes inadequate for the real conditions of the field.<\/p><h2>Water needs do not follow fixed dates<\/h2><p>The water requirement of a crop is never the same.<\/p><p>It changes day by day <strong>depending on many variables<\/strong>: air temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation, recent rainfall, soil characteristics, root depth, phenological stage and vegetative state of the plant.<\/p><p><strong>Two apparently similar weeks on the calendar can therefore be very different from an agronomic point of view<\/strong>A period of intense heat, for example, can rapidly increase evapotranspiration and make irrigation insufficient, even if it would have been adequate in milder conditions. Conversely, well-distributed rainfall or soil with good water retention capacity can temporarily reduce the need for irrigation.<\/p><p>For this reason the point is not only to know how often to water, but <strong>understand how much water is actually available for the crop and how much is consumed over time<\/strong>.<\/p><p>L<strong>&#039;efficient irrigation<\/strong> It is born precisely from this reading: not from the repetition of a practice, but from the<strong>continuous observation of the relationship between plants, soil and atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Evapotranspiration, the variable that the calendar doesn&#039;t see<\/h2><p>One of the central elements in irrigation management is the<strong>evapotranspiration<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This term refers to <strong>the total amount of water that returns to the atmosphere through two processes<\/strong>: evaporation from the soil and plant transpiration. It is a fundamental quantity because it directly describes <strong>how much water is actually lost from the soil-crop system<\/strong>.<\/p><p>When <strong>temperatures are rising<\/strong>, the air is drier, the wind is stronger or the solar radiation is high, evapotranspiration increases. Consequently, also <strong>the crop&#039;s water requirement can increase significantly<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The calendar alone is not able to interpret this dynamic.<\/p><p>An irrigation schedule set every seven or ten days doesn&#039;t take into account that, during a particularly hot and windy week, the crop may require much more water than during a cooler and wetter week. Depending on the species grown and the phenological stage, even relatively short periods of water shortage can affect growth, yield, product quality, and production uniformity.<\/p><p>In both cases,<strong> the problem is not just the amount of water used, but when it is used<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Irrigation efficiency does not depend on the simple containment of volumes, but on <strong>ability to distribute water when really needed and in the correct quantity<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Each plot responds differently<\/h2><p>Another limitation of the<strong>calendar irrigation<\/strong> is that it tends to <strong>consider the plot as a homogeneous unit<\/strong>.<\/p><p>In reality, however, even <strong>very different areas can coexist within the same field<\/strong>They change soil texture, water-holding capacity, drainage, rooting depth, crop vigor, and stress response.<\/p><p>One part of the plot may be under conditions of greater water availability, while another may approach a critical threshold more quickly. <strong>A uniform intervention, decided only on the basis of the calendar, therefore risks being excessive in some areas and insufficient in others.<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This <strong>internal variability<\/strong> It is one of the most important aspects of precision agriculture.<\/p><p>To observe it means <strong>to move beyond the idea of the field as an indistinct surface and begin to read it as a complex system<\/strong>, where irrigation decisions must take into account real differences between areas, crops and soil conditions.<\/p><h2>From fixed shift to water balance<\/h2><p>The necessary transition is from the fixed shift to the water balance.<\/p><p>The <strong>water balance<\/strong> It allows you to estimate how much water enters and exits the system. On the one hand, there are <strong>the contributions<\/strong>, such as rain and irrigation. It means <strong>anticipate water stress before it becomes visible<\/strong>. It means <strong>reduce waste without compromising production<\/strong>. It means <strong>transform data into an agronomic decision<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>The calendar<\/strong> can still help organize work, but <strong>it can no longer be the only criterion for choosing<\/strong>.<\/p><p>To manage irrigation efficiently you need<strong> instruments<\/strong> <strong>capable of reading the field, interpreting the real need and providing operational
