The project<\/h2>

Started in 2024<\/strong>, the research project on Kiwi die-off<\/strong> continues the crop analysis and monitoring activities<\/strong> Actinidia<\/strong><\/em> in Lazio and Calabria<\/strong>.<\/p>

Funded by Elle Esse AOP<\/strong>\u00a0within the Operational Programme of the CMO of Emilia-Romagna and implemented by TETHYS in collaboration with theUniversity of Calabria, University of Naples<\/strong>\u00a0and some agricultural companies of the Pontine territory<\/strong>, the project aims to identify the environmental and agronomic factors that contribute to the onset of the phenomenon<\/strong>.
The goal is to define a continuous and objective monitoring system of vegetative state and soil moisture<\/strong>, to support producers in the prevention of water and root stress<\/strong> that they can promote the onset of kiwifruit decline<\/strong>.<\/p>

The previous stages<\/h2>

The project was launched in 2024 and presented in the opening article The CMO kiwifruit decline project: a step forward in innovation<\/a>, who illustrated it goals<\/strong> And working methodology<\/strong>, based on module integration Watch<\/a> And Aqua<\/a> for the satellite monitoring<\/strong> and the water balance<\/strong>.<\/p>

In the following months, thewinter update<\/a> he described the first soil moisture elaborations<\/strong>, with theidentification of areas subject to water stagnation<\/strong>, while thesummer update<\/a> documented thevegetative evolution of crops<\/strong> And the differences between covered and uncovered plots<\/strong>, with a First assessment of the impact of hail protection on plant water requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>

Activities in 2025<\/h2>

During an update meeting between the project partners, TETHYS presented the results of activities carried out in the first ten months of 2025<\/strong>.
The work focused on three lines of analysis: the vegetative state of crops, the seasonal water balance, and winter monitoring of soil moisture.<\/p>

Vegetative state monitoring<\/h3>

Through the form Watch<\/strong>, they were constantly monitored the vegetative vigor indices (NDVI)<\/strong> of the six plots under study.<\/p>

The anomalie<\/strong> identified during the season have been verified in two phases<\/strong>: first for exclude any atmospheric effects not detected by the system<\/strong> (haze or cloud cover), then with a visual inspection in the field by the producers<\/strong>.
To date, no significant critical issues have been found and the indices show a trend consistent with the physiology of the plants.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Water balance analysis<\/h3>

The processing of the form Aqua<\/strong> have affected two plots of land to dateDaniele Corbi farm in Sermoneta (LT)<\/strong>, specialized in production of green and yellow kiwifruit<\/strong>.
The comparison between actual irrigation volumes and the needs estimated by Aqua<\/strong> highlighted a slight overwatering<\/strong> in the'uncovered plot<\/strong> and a more marked excess in the one covered by anti-hail net<\/strong>, where evapotranspiration is naturally lower.
In both cases, however, no symptoms of die-off or root stress were observed<\/strong>, a sign that the excess water did not produce agronomically significant effects.<\/p>

Winter soil moisture monitoring<\/h3>

During the period between January and March 2025<\/strong>, with Aqua<\/strong> it was analyzedreal evapotranspiration<\/strong> cumulative of a plot of approximately six hectares of theMauro Guzzo company in Borgo Montello (LT)<\/strong>, cultivated with Hayward kiwi<\/strong> And without hail cover<\/strong>.
The processing has highlighted three areas with anomalous evapotranspiration values<\/strong>, potentially attributable to water stagnation phenomena<\/strong>.
The identified areas will be subject to field verification<\/strong>, with the aim of validate satellite analyses<\/strong> And improve the calibration of the hydrological model<\/strong>.<\/p>

Perspectives<\/h2>

Activities will continue in 2026 with the'extension of monitoring to a greater number of companies<\/strong> and the correlation of water and vegetative data with productivity and mortality indicators<\/strong>.
